Engines and Efficiency
Power is an important part of any pickup truck, since these vehicles are expected to take on rough terrain without breaking a sweat. And with the base model featuring a 2.2 litre engine that has 375Nm of torque at its disposal, the Ranger certainly performs well in this department.
There is a larger 3.2 litre TDCi model available which raises the torque to 470Nm, making it even more appropriate for towing as well as direct handling of heavy loads. And all this power is put to good use thanks to VGT technology, which ensures that the turbocharger acts appropriately depending on the speed the truck is moving.
In combination with an optional six-speed manual transmission, fuel economy of up to 36.2mpg can be achieved, with each engine falling in line with the expectations of the Euro 5 regulations on emissions.
Whether driving on construction sites, forest tracks or farmland, the selectable 4x4 system of the Ford Ranger is capable of keeping the vehicle under control and gaining traction. Using the two-wheel-drive setting is ideal for reducing fuel consumption when driving on the tarmac, while high- and low-range four-wheel-drive options can be activated as and when needed.
An automatic transmission available on some Ranger models makes it even easier to take on steep inclines, eliminating a lot of the work and hassle from the process and allowing the driver to concentrate on other things. Safety and manoeuvrability can be enhanced through the addition of things like a reversing camera and parking sensors, while cruise control and a sat nav make covering long distances on the motorway a breeze.
Ford Ranger Models
The base model Ranger XL is a single-cab pickup truck that comes with plenty of good features as standard, including a CD player, locking tailgate, 16-inch steel wheels and an alarm.
The Ranger XLT brings things up a notch, with a double-cab set-up providing three additional seats in the rear, as well as a heated windscreen, power folding door mirrors and air conditioning. It even has windscreen wipers and headlights that activate automatically when required.
The Ranger Limited ups the ante with the inclusion of climate control, an integrated touchscreen infotainment system, chrome detailing on the exterior and privacy glass. Both double- and super-cab variants of this model are on offer.
The Ranger Wildtrak is both sporty and stylish, with 18-inch alloy wheels on the outside and leather upholstery within making it look and feel impressively luxurious, even if it will be used for practical purposes.
