Mercedes Sprinter 95-06 Model Review

Mercedes Sprinter 1995 Model

The first-generation Mercedes Sprinter was on sale from 1995 to 2006. With three load lengths, different roof heights, chassis-cabs and crew-cabs, plus weights from 2.8 tonnes up to 4.6 tonnes and five engine options, it means there’s almost no such thing as a ‘standard’ Sprinter. The Sprinter was International Van of the Year when it launched, and the fact that it stayed in production for over a decade shows how right the design was. In fact, the first-generation van is still available in some markets as the Sprinter Classic. It's little wonder that it has proved popular with large fleets and smaller businesses alike.

The most common engine is the 2.1 litre four-cylinder common rail diesel with a choice of 82, 109 and 129bhp. There’s also a 2.7-litre five-cylinder diesel giving 156bhp and a 2.3 litre petrol engine delivering 143bhp. Gearboxes are a five-speed manual or automatic.

Inside the seats are firm with plenty of adjustment, so even tall drivers will be able to get comfortable. There’s a radio/cassette as standard and plenty of storage spaces around the cab. The van features lots of thoughtful design touches, including a grab handle to help with entry to the cab and a step built into the rear bumper. There are standard side and rear loading doors, making for good access to the cargo area.

Electronic stability control was added in 2003, and anti-lock brakes are fitted, but a driver’s airbag was optional throughout the first-generation Sprinter’s life. Similarly, an immobiliser is standard but central locking and an alarm were optional.

Of course, the Sprinter benefits from Mercedes’ reputation for quality, and that means it commands a price premium when bought used. Servicing is between 14,000 and 25,000 miles, depending on the model. Economy-form diesel versions should be competitive, but remember that for a long time the Sprinter was one of the fastest vans on the market.
