Versatile New Sprinter Van Range Launched

Mercedes-Benz has just started taking orders for the next-generation Sprinter range, which it claims can be configured in a huge 1700 different ways.

The Sprinter will not actually reach customers until June this year, but the promotional bandwagon designed to raise its profile has rolled into action this month and is providing business buyers with an idea of what to expect.

One of the biggest mechanical updates comes in the form of a front-wheel-drive model, which joins existing rear- and all-wheel-drive Sprinters in the line-up. The main reason to pick this model is that its payload capacity is 50kg greater than that of its stable mates, as front-wheel drive is less of a burden.

Mercedes-Benz has also updated the transmission technology for the Sprinter’s front-wheel drive, making sure that pulling power is provided effectively and efficiently at all times.

Perhaps most exciting of all is the news that the all-electric Sprinter model will arrive next year, spearheading broader plans to make zero-emissions Mercedes-Benz models available across the spectrum.

In 2018 buyers will have to make do with a number of modern diesel engines, all of which comply with the latest emissions regulations.

The hundreds of different configurations include a panel van, crew cab, chassis cab, drop-side pickup, tourer and many more besides. It is this flexibility and customisability that will help the Sprinter to continue outshining its competitors, according to company spokesperson Volker Mornhinweg.

Payload capacities top out at an impressive 5.5 tonnes for the very largest of the new Sprinter vans, while the load volume limit of 17 cubic metres is also impressive.

Getting goods and equipment in and out of the rear load space should be less physically demanding thanks to fact that the loading sill is now eight centimetres lower than before. This will also help for those who are thinking about converting the new Sprinter van into a camper.

In the cab, cutting-edge safety, entertainment and connectivity features are par for the course, encompassing the likes of a reversing camera connected to a display integrated into the rear-view mirror, automatic windscreen wipers and many other high-tech components.

The list of standard kit goes on to include more comfortable seating, enhanced air conditioning and even the ability to start the engine without having to put the key in the ignition. All of this edges the van towards a more car-like user experience that will be welcomed by commercial drivers.

The option to add a full 360-degree camera system to make manoeuvring and parking even easier will be available to customers.

The exterior of the Sprinter has been given quite a bit of attention, especially at the front end. The new grille is more prominent and aggressive, with the headlights also seeming more toned and focused.

Of course, the next-generation Sprinter had to make these aesthetic changes, since it is still playing catch-up to the best-selling Transit range from Ford, which looks better and is more attractive to prospective customers than outgoing models.
