A version of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter with four-wheel drive has been added to the arsenal of tools that are at the disposal of the brave volunteers who work within the Peak District National Park and save lives in emergency situations.

The Sprinter 4x4 has been adapted to meet the needs of the Edale Mountain Rescue Team, enabling to them to get themselves and their gear to remote parts of the park in a range of scenarios, such as when hikers are injured or go missing, according to Business Vans.

As well as being able to help transport anyone who is in need of assistance, the Sprinter is capable of being a mobile base of operations for the team while also providing resources for the police and other emergency services that may be on the scene as well.

4x4 Created In-House by Mercedes-Benz

The roof of the van is positively bristling with antennae, providing the internal computing equipment with the connectivity it needs to operate effectively, even when it is being driven a long way from civilisation. Specialist software enables the users to coordinate rescue efforts with additional volunteers and ensure that everyone is kept in the loop as the situation develops.

The 4x4 version of the Sprinter is created in-house by Mercedes-Benz, meaning that all of the major mechanical adaptations are entirely official. As well as offering four-wheel drive to give it added traction on loose surfaces, it also has higher ground clearance than the standard van so that rough terrain does not give it any trouble.

The four-wheel-drive capabilities of the Sprinter are especially impressive, as it is not a permanent set-up but rather makes use of rear-wheel drive for normal use to save fuel. The driver is able to engage power to all four wheels as and when necessary, while the presence of the Electronic Traction System means that skidding and wheel spin are automatically eliminated.

All-Terrain Capabilities

Mountain rescue team spokesperson James Stubley said that he was a long-time user and fan of Mercedes-Benz vans, and he pointed out that he and his colleagues had previously been relying on a used Sprinter originally provided second-hand by South Yorkshire Police. In spite of having rolled out of the factory two decades ago, this venerable van was still fully operational, but they decided that the time for a replacement had arrived.

The 50-strong collective of mountain rescue volunteers working in the Peak District are committed to being available to respond to emergencies at any time of the day or night, irrespective of the weather conditions. And they deal with over 120 serious situations a year, meaning the Sprinter 4x4 will be an invaluable and well-used asset.

Aside from its all-terrain capabilities, the Sprinter in question is similarly equipped to the standard 316 CDI model, meaning that it gets a modern diesel engine that is efficient, clean and built to last, just like the rest of the vans in the current Mercedes-Benz range on offer in the UK.
