About Nissan Cabstar

Nissan

Popular with users such as landscape gardeners and builders, small trucks like the Nissan Cabstar - NT400 Cabstar to give it its full name - have a big load capacity in a compact package, making them ideal for urban environments. Because the cab is located above the engine, it allows for a shorter chassis than more conventional van or chassis cab designs. It also means less space is devoted to the engine and cab, so there’s more for the cargo. This makes it a common choice as a tipper or dropside, but box van and flatbed conversions are available too.

About Nissan Cabstar

Nissan

The Cabstar can be had in a choice of three different wheelbases, with a single cab seating three or a dual cab seating six. Gross weights start at 3,400kg and go up to 4,500kg with loads of up to 2,700kg (including bodywork). It is available with double rear wheels too to give it improved traction and greater carrying capacity. It’s also available with four different trim levels - Basic, Basic+, Pro and Pro+ - with the latter only being available on long-wheelbase models.

The latest Cabstar models all use 2.5 litre Euro 5 diesel engines putting out up to 143bhp and between 250 and 350Nm of torque. The latest engines also emit eight per cent less CO2 than the older Euro 4 models. The lowest-powered versions of the truck have a five-speed manual gearbox; more powerful Cabstars give you six speeds. A small turning circle and power steering make the Cabstar very manoeuvrable, and there are all-round disc brakes to ensure safe stopping.

Nissan offers a number of body options through its Good To Go scheme. These include box vans, dropsides and rear and three-way tippers ready to drive away. You can also take your Cabstar as a chassis cab and go to your preferred specialist body builder if you wish.

Inside the cab, a big glass area provides a light and airy place to be in, and there’s good visibility thanks to cutaways in the door windows and the forward seating position. All versions have lots of storage space, with door bins, a glovebox and several cubbies in the dash for odds and ends. Electric windows and a CD radio with Bluetooth are standard across the range. Pro models get a hill-start assist system, electric mirrors, a multi-function display and front fog lamps. On the options list are sat nav, air con and a passenger airbag. There are plenty of standard safety features, including seatbelt pre-tensioners and a driver's airbag, plus a shock-absorbing front bumper to limit damage in low-speed collisions. Basic+ versions get ABS brakes with electronic force distribution.

The Cabstar promises low running costs. The cab tilts for easy access to the mechanicals on single-cab versions, and service intervals are two years or 25,000 miles, and there’s a 100,000-mile, five-year warranty which includes roadside assistance. The warranty covers body components on Good To Go models, giving added peace of mind. Overall, this is a good choice of van.
