With the 2006 L200, Mitsubishi aimed at producing a more car-like experience without giving up any of the practicality and ability of the earlier model. It has more streamlined looks and improved handling, plus more space in the rear seats of double cab models.

Even the most basic 4Work models now come with a height-adjustable driver's seat and CD player with MP3 connection as standard. Move up to 4LIfe and you get electric front windows, air con and keyless entry. Warrior adds climate control and electric windows all round; Animal adds exterior graphics, sat nav and a CD autochanger. An additional Elegance model joins the range, and it has full leather upholstery, powered and heated seats and a DVD player as standard.

The 2006 L200 delivers a better driving experience with a firmer ride and less body roll compared to the previous model. A new Euro IV compliant diesel now has 134bhp or 160bhp on the Animal. Five-speed manual transmission is standard, and there’s the option of a four-speed automatic gearbox too. An updated four-wheel-drive system means it can now be engaged on the road as well as off.

There’s a one tonne payload and 2.7 tonne towing capacity; the load deck is now a little shorter at 2,220mm on single cabs and 1,325mm on double cabs. There’s also an intermediate Club cab version with occasional rear seats and an 1,805mm load deck. Again, a range of hard and soft covers can be added for extra versatility.

All models now get anti-lock brakes with electronic distribution for safer stopping, plus driver and passenger air bags as standard. Warrior versions and above have an electronic stability programme to guard against skids. Double cab models also have ISOFIX points for child seats.

Service intervals are increased to 12,500 miles and economy is improved too, so it should be cheaper to run than the earlier model. L200s hold their value well, making them attractive to business users.
