About Renault Clio Van

Renault

The Renault Clio Van is essentially a straightforward conversion of the popular car. Externally, it looks pretty much as if Renault forgot to cut out or glaze the back windows. Internally, the main difference is simply that the back seats have been left out to leave room for a van-style loading space. However, there is a definite if modest market for super-compact, hatchback-sized vans, and within this market such straightforward conversion techniques have been enough to produce some of the main contenders.

About Renault Clio Van

Renault

Specifications

The Renault Clio Van is equipped with one of Renault's most popular and commonly used diesel engines, a 1.5 litre dCi model. It puts out 68bhp of power - a low figure by van standards but more than adequate for a vehicle which remains the size of a supermini hatchback.

The available loading space falls just short of a cubic metre. The maximum payload that the Renault Clio Van is rated to handle is 535kg.

Features that the Clio van is equipped with include central locking, which comes complete with an anti-intruder system that automatically locks all doors upon reaching 5mph, an on-board computer that analyses fuel economy, ABS and twin airbags. A number of additional features are also available as options, including air conditioning, a fancier stereo system, a metal grille bulkhead and front fog lights. There is also a sportpack option which provides a number of purely cosmetic changes such as alloy wheels.

Positives and Negatives

The van-flavoured edition of the Renault Clio is a solid if unremarkable entry into the small but dedicated market for ultra-compact vans. Its lack of loading capacity compared to the vast majority of vans is pronounced, but then again if you see this as a disadvantage it is probably more a sign that the Clio fits into the wrong category for your needs than a fault with the vehicle. Compared to its rivals, its loading space of roughly one cubic metre is comparable to most and slightly superior to others such as the Vauxhall Corsa van. Its potential payload of 535kg, though not the highest figure in this niche, is also more than that offered by the likes of the Ford Fiesta van. Certainly, it is generous enough that you would probably struggle to exceed it in the limited space available.

The driving experience offered by the Clio van is excellent - a side effect, partly, of this being such a straightforward conversion from a compact family car. Steering and handling are excellent and allow you to get a feel for the road in a way that is missing from most modern vehicles. The engine provides good pull and nippy acceleration while also delivering solid fuel economy of just under 66 miles to the gallon.

The suspension could be better, as it is set rather firm. Engine noise in the cabin can also be on the loud side at high speeds. While this may not be ideal over long distances, it is not a disaster either, and the vehicle is quite suited to longer trips.

The list of features is solid if not overly extensive, both in safety terms and in the gadgets you get in the cabin. Speaking of the cabin, it is comfortable and fairly roomy, though it lacks the level of storage space you would expect from a purpose-designed commercial vehicle.

Conclusion

The Renault Clio Van is not exactly ground-breaking. However, if your needs will be met by a vehicle as small as a supermini, then it is by no means a bad choice. It is versatile and enjoyable to drive, and while it is not really the “best” at any one thing, it doesn't do anything terribly badly either.
