About Renault Maxity

Renault

Designed as the successor to the Renault Mascott, the Maxity packs a serious punch, offering a compact and versatile footprint at competitive prices. Very similar in design to the Spanish-made Nissan Cabstar, the Renault Maxity is sold as a chassis cab, but buyers are presented with a wide range of options nonetheless. With two different cabs, three wheelbases, multiple wheel configurations and a powerful choice of two engines, buyers are almost spoilt for choice. The adoption of Euro 5 fuel consumption standards for more recent models makes the Renault Maxity a difficult contender to beat for those seeking a high-performing van for service in trade and industry.

Details

In production since 2007, the Maxity is a light van chassis cab manufactured by French car-makers Renault. The Maxity is available as a steel-framed tripper-truck specialised for accommodating steel box vans or in dropside configuration with alloy sides and tailboard and wood floor. There are two different cabs to choose from: the standard two-door cab with tilting function enabling engine access and a four-door crew cab. Three wheelbases add flexibility to this vehicle, and they range from 2,500mm and 2,900mm to 3,400mm. The Maxity can also come with single or double rear wheels, with a maximum cargo payload for either configuration of 2.2t.

The Renault Maxity is powered by either the 2.5l DXi engine, offering 110hp or 130hp, or the super-charged 3.0l DXi pumping out 150hp. Transmission options include five- or six-speed, depending on the model. Renault offered two trim grades - the Dynamic and the Advantage - but both variants feature driver and passenger airbags, remote central locking, power windows and adjustable steering column as standard.

The Renault Maxity features a heavy-duty chassis designed with robustness in mind. The van boasts a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 4.3t, which can be extended to a maximum of 8t with the use of the towing hook to attach an additional load. The front axle can take a load of up to 1.7t, while the reinforced rear axle can support up to 4.5t, allowing the van to be used for heavy construction work or refuse collection. The rear suspension is reinforced, as is the battery. The cross members have a specially designed ‘U’ side profile to provide maximum payload and reliability. The option of double tyres at the rear increases durability and robustness.

Another central design concept of the Maxity is for it to be comfortably and easily manoeuvred through an urban environment. The Maxity features a compact turning radius of just 4.8m - no mean feat given a cab length varying from 2,651mm to 4,961mm and width of 1,870mm.

The cab has been designed and tested for optimal visibility in urban environments, with a 192-degree high angle of vision provided by the wide windscreen and cab-over-engine build. What is more, the large rear window makes handling equipment much easier.

Safety is a persistent concern, with driver and passenger airbags as standard. Indicator lights are incorporated into the electrically adjusted wing mirrors to provide improved visibility for other road users. The front bumpers have been reinforced with an energy absorber. ESC is fitted as standard as well, providing extra stability to the driver in sticky situations.

Additional safety features include Hill Start Assist, which locks the brakes for several seconds after the pedal is released to prevent the van from rolling downhill, and a Lane Departure Warning System, which triggers an audible alarm if the computer detects a seemingly unintended alteration in vehicle direction.

The Next Generation Renault Maxity: Higher Power Using Less Fuel

2011 saw the implementation of the new Euro 5 standards for light commercial vehicles, alongside the adoption of new power ratings. These new engines offer maximum torque of 350Nm at 1,600 RPM. The lower-power 2.5l DXi Euro 5 engine delivers 8% lower fuel consumption compared with the earlier iteration and is available in 120hp and 140hp. Oil drain frequency has also been increased from 30,000km to 40,000km to reduce operating costs further.

The 150hp 3.0l DXi engine is also upgraded to meet the Euro V standards and is 45kg lighter than the previous version. This engine has also been engineered to meet EEV environmental standards, featuring a particulate filter fitted as standard to permit vehicle operation in emission-regulated urban zones. Service intervals are widely spaced at every 40,000km. Furthermore, the engine is fitted with a variable geometry turbo-compressor to provide extra torque, and a limited slip differential increases the pulling power of the vehicle in extreme conditions, making certain that whatever the job the Renault Maxity is up to the task.
