Hugely flexible vehicles, tippers can tip one way to drop the load at the rear – but in addition, three way tippers can tip either side. Older vans will use hydraulic PTOs for the tipping equipment, with more modern tippers using electric systems. As with dropside vans, tippers are used widely by builders and builders merchants for local deliveries. Able to squeeze into the smallest delivery point, tippers below 3.5 tonnes GVW can be driven by any driver. Newcomers to the tipper market are the 4x4 pickups with a tipper body fitted to the rear – giving the operator even greater flexibility as far as delivery locations are concerned.
