Toyota unveiled their limited edition Hilux Invincible 50 at the Frankfurt Motor Show

In the five decades since the Hilux was introduced, Toyota’s flagship pickup has become the first word in ruggedness and reliability. At the Frankfurt Motor Show this month, the Japanese automaker unveiled a limited-edition model called the Invincible 50 that pays homage to the impressive achievements of the range to date, according to Auto Express.

British buyers are expected to be able to get their hands on the Hilux Invincible 50 at some point in 2018, although this has not yet been officially confirmed, just in time for the 50th anniversary of its debut in Japan. Interestingly, the anniversary of the original Hilux’s launch in Europe will not hit until a year later; however, this is not stopping Toyota’s planned celebrations.

Over 18 million Hilux pickup trucks have been sold globally since 1968. It is a popular choice for business buyers and individuals on every continent thanks to its hard-wearing design.

In the modern era, pickups are moving from purely practical products into a new niche whereby they offer car-like comfort alongside their commercial capabilities. This shift is something Toyota is also recognising with the Invincible 50, which boasts an impressive array of features and is much more than a simple aesthetic upgrade of the standard model.

Only available as a double cab truck, this pickup will come with a specially strengthened undercarriage that provides protection against rough terrain and prevents damage to important components. Even the wheel arches have been beefed up to make it an off-road powerhouse that can be driven with confidence in any conditions.

18-inch alloy rims, finished in pure black, are matched with tyres from BF Goodrich that work just as well on the road as off. A large decal emblazoning the name of the Invincible 50 on the side of the truck will leave passers-by in no doubt about this vehicle's special status.

This logo is repeated in other areas, from the floor mats to the liner that protects the load bed. Other useful inclusions, such as a tool box, will keep business users happy while catering to those who want to use the truck for excursions at the weekend that have more to do with leisure than work.

A UK price for the Hilux Invincible 50 has not yet been confirmed; likewise, the full specs are not yet known. It is safe to assume, however, that it will stick fairly close to existing Invincible models in most areas while adding a few perks of its own.

Buyers can expect to see features such as air con, cruise control, and an infotainment system with a touchscreen display and wireless connectivity for smartphone integration factored into the spec sheet of this limited-edition pickup.

All this luxury makes it seem quite far removed from the early Hilux pickups, some of which are still in use to this day; however, when put through its paces, this LCV can still prove that it has the off-road credentials to live up to expectations.
