As the base model VW pickup, it does its best to impress by sporting 16-inch alloy wheels, colour-coded bumpers, electric windows and climate control as standard. The list of automatic inclusions even extends to things like mud flaps at the front and rear, heavy-duty suspension and a rear-diff lock set-up for excellent traction off-road.
With a 2.0 litre turbo diesel engine, the Startline can offer a combined fuel efficiency rating of 36.2 miles to the gallon, producing 205 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre and pumping out 340Nm of torque. This makes it the cleanest and most efficient model of the range, albeit with the least power.
The load area measures 2.52 metres square, and the Amarok is actually slightly larger and wider than many of its contemporaries, including the Toyota Hilux. This means that it can accommodate a Euro pallet with ease, even in a sideways configuration, which is a unique feature only found on this range.
The Trendline is a higher-specification iteration of the basic Amarok and thus comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, a six-speaker CD player and radio system, a trip computer with a display on the dash, cruise control and plenty of onboard storage compartments.
Like all models in the range, it offers off-road-ready anti-lock braking as well as anti-slip regulation. Hill starts and descents are controlled using an intelligent onboard system, and the Trendline benefits from an electronic rear diff lock rather than the mechanical set-up found on the Startline.
Buyers can add a 4MOTION auto transmission if required, which makes driving it on long journeys or over tricky surfaces even easier, since concentrating on gear changes is not required. A more powerful Euro 5 compliant diesel engine can be selected on this model, with up to 420Nm of torque available to make towing less of a strain.
For the flagship Amarok pickup, Volkswagen has opted to outfit the interior with leather upholstery and heated front seats, as well as 18-inch alloy wheels, chrome detailing and privacy glass at the rear.
This model may be more comfortable and luxurious than its stable mates, but it still performs just as well off-road and will be a welcome workhorse for those that choose it. Integrated sat nav is available as an optional upgrade, along with a range of additional instruments and the option for mobile phone synchronisation.
The low sill height at the rear of this and every other Amarok makes loading simple, while a lockable tail gate will keep cargo safe and secure while it is on board.
