Volkswagen Crafter Voted Best Van of 2017

The Volkswagen Crafter

The revamped VW Crafter has stormed the LCV market this year, expanding upon the popularity of its predecessor and complementing its smaller stable mate, the Transporter. Now the hard work put into the Crafter’s development has paid off, as it was named Van of the Year 2017 by an expert panel at Auto Express.

Van fof the Year 2017

Praise was heaped upon the van for its impressive set of standard specifications, which focus on safety and connectivity without requiring buyers to pay extra. VW’s recent decision to add automatic emergency breaking to all its LCVs has benefited this range, while the inclusion of Bluetooth means that taking calls or streaming media while behind the wheel is easier than ever.

Other safety kit can be specified to improve the overall driving experience, with lane departure detection and automatic course correction being especially impressive as available options. Parking and trailer assist capabilities are also on the specification sheet, while touchscreen infotainment brings even more multimedia features to the Crafter.

Members of the judging panel were also impressed by the sheer amount of space which is available within the cab of this van, meaning that driver and passengers have plenty of room for themselves and will not feel cramped or squashed together. With a variety of in-cab storage areas, it is a practical everyday LCV that makes full use of its larger dimensions.

The engine underpinning the new Crafter is a two-litre turbo-diesel unit which comes in a number of different set-ups, all of which boast competitive levels of torque to give it enough power to handle heavy loads and towing tasks alike.

If it is driven carefully, the new Crafter can achieve almost 40 miles to the gallon, which makes it suitable for businesses looking to rein in spending in this area. Although it is worth pointing out that efficiency ratings still need to be taken with a pinch of salt, and performance will take a hit when load capacities are met.

Honourable Mentions to Other Manufacturers

The VW Crafter may have beaten out its rivals in this particular set of industry awards, but there were honourable mentions given to some vans which came close to taking the crown this year. The Ford Transit was one such model. It enjoys its place at the top of the market in terms of sales and has become more versatile as an option thanks to the addition of new transmissions this year.

The more compact Peugeot Expert family, which shares a platform with Citroen’s Dispatch and the Toyota-branded Proace, was also cited as being a close contender for van of the year. Judges admired it for the quality of the driving experience if offers, which comes close to matching modern cars rather than other LCVs.

Choosing the best van is, of course, a subjective process, since some businesses require specific features that are not as relevant to other organisations. And with used vans available to buy, sticking solely to the latest releases is not necessary.
