Volkswagen Transporter T5 2010 Model

The 2010 Volkswagen Transporter is still the fifth-generation ‘T5’ released in 2003, but with thorough and important revisions. Most significant is the new range of more efficient and quieter engines boasting much higher fuel efficiency. Safety features are also enhanced, and the new Transporter receives a technology upgrade in the form of Bluetooth functionality, among other things. First released in 2010, the face-lifted Volkswagen Transporter was recognised in 2014 as the second most reliable medium van according to Parkers Van Reliability Survey.

Under the Hood

The Transporter gains the latest Volkswagen engine, offering a driving feel of smooth refinement. The 2.0l turbo diesel comes in four different power outputs. The lower two, rated at 84bhp and 102bhp, come with five-speed transmission. Fifth gear can be reached at speeds as low as 35mph, and the engine generates plenty of torque to make the van feel nippy when driving in urban environments. The slightly more powerful 102bhp output engine cruises nicely on motorways, though acceleration seems to slow down between 55mph and 70mph. When fully loaded, acceleration is obviously affected and maximum cruising speed fails to get far beyond 80mph.

The second two models offer 140bhp and 180bhp, with the latter one featuring twin-turbo charging. The six-speed manual transmission helps to keep fuel economy at 37mpg and 36mpg respectively - barely a change from the 102bhp’s 38mpg. Optional extras on the two higher-powered models include the 4MOTION four-wheel-drive system and DSG automatic transmission.

In the Cab

In the driving seat, the revamped Transporter will feel familiar to drivers who have used older models. The layout of switches and instruments is broadly the same, although the switches have been upgraded to the latest parts from VW. The instrument displays have traded their former blue backlighting for the more conventional VW visual identity of white and red against a black background. In terms of gear and technology, the new radio has a more premium-feel exterior with a neater button layout and a CD player.

Comfort is easy to find, as the steering wheel can be adjusted for rake and height, while the driver’s seat can be adjusted for reach, rake, lumber and height, ensuring that the cab is a comfortable place to be even on the longest journeys. Wing mirrors require manual adjusting, but there are plenty of optional comfort-boosting extras, including a leather gear knob and steering wheel, electric windows, air conditioning and a choice of bulkheads. The engineering has improved impressively on the 2003 model, smoothing over potholes and uneven road surfaces alike, keeping your cargo safe and secure.


The quieter and more efficient engines, in combination with tech upgrades, including Bluetooth and other premium cab features, make the 2010 Volkswagen Transporter a desirable new van and a highly sought-after used vehicle. The 2.0l engine is a step-down from the 2.5l in the earlier incarnation of the T5, however, so for really heavy use, an older 2003 version 2.5l may be preferable.

The 2010 Volkswagen Transporter T5 was succeeded by the T6 in 2015.
